What should i wear to a kickboxing class?
We reccomend comfortable workout attire. Most of our students prefer to train barefoot but if you prefer you can wear trainers. Please remember to always bring a water bottle.
We do offer club t-shirts, attire and merchandise that carry our logo, please use the contact form or ask instructors at sessions for more information on how to order club merchandise.
Is kickboxing suitable for beginners with no prior experience?
Absolutely! Our classes are designed to accommodate individuals from age 4 yrs up to the age you feel fit and able enough to train and we accept students at all skill levels from beginner to experienced.
How often should i attend classes to see progress?
We currently offer 3 one hour training sessions per week. This equates to a total of 36 hours of training between each grading period.
The more you attend the more you will perfect your technique and the better your fitness will be.
We hold gradings every 3 months for licensed members and we require students to have trained for a minimum of 10 sessions between gradings in order for them to be approved by the chief instructor to take thier next belt. However we strongly recommend that you try to attend more sessions than the minimum requirement to ensure greater success at your grading and greater development of your overall technique and fitness.
Where are your sessions held?
Our sessions are held 3x a week on a Tuesday at 8-9pm, Thursday 8-9pm and Saturday at 11:00am-12:00pm at Ilson Fight Unit, Critchley Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire.
What equipment do i need?
We provide gloves, focus pads and kickshields for student use.
Many of our students will go on to buy thier own kit if they decide to continue on with us but this is not compulsory as we provide the basic kit needed.
Gumshields, shin pads and headguards may be required for sparring.
Your instructor can advise you about suitable kit to purchase if you decide to buy your own. Please dont hesitate to ask for guidance!
How do i grade for belts?
In order to grade you need to be a licensed student. A license costs £15 per year. Belt gradings will be taken every 3 months provided you have attended at least the minimum amount of sessions required and you and your instructor feels you are ready. Gradings are charged at £20 per attempt and when you pass you will receive the corresponding colour belt, a certificate and your grade pass will be stamped in your license book.
PLEASE NOTE - When you reach your Dan gradings you will follow a different schedule for time trained in between belts.
Please ask an instructor for a license application or for more information on our grading scheme. You can also make an enquiry using the contact form on our home page.
All grades are registered nationally with the Cobra Martial Arts Association and all black belts will be listed on www.blackbeltregister.co.uk
Is there an age restriction?
We welcome students from age 4 years up to as old as you feel fit and able to train.
Who is your governing body?
We are affiliated and licensed by the CMAA (Cobra Martial Arts Association). Visit www.cmaa.co.uk to find information on what this means, how we are governed, what the cmaa instructor standards are and much more. Belts achieved with Spartan Element Kickboxing Academy are ratified by the CMAA and recognised nationwide. Always ensure any club you take your belts/KYU's with is not only affiliated with a recognised governing body, but that they can also evidence this.
